FHSWIN - Family File Definition
The Family History System can be used to create and maintain multiple, independent Family Files, however each must have an entry in the FHS Family File Setup table providing information about the names and locations of the Family File datasets. Use Main Menu option "File/Family File Setup" to begin this process.
The "Family Setup:" shown is the name of the "current" family file definition. The "down arrow" next to the name opens a list of all existing Family Setups from which you can select a different setup to work with. The "Default Setup" is the one that will be used at the beginning of an FHSWIN working session.
The basic File Definition display shows the locations of the four types of files used by The Family History System software. They are: Family Files, Work Files, Transfer Files and Report Files. Among these:
- the "Family Files" have all of the information that is entered about individuals;
- the "Work Files" may group individual records as "Ancestors", "Descendants", "Relatives" or "Selected"; or hold other information about individual records such as: location of references in reports or placement of entries on charts;
- the "Transfer Files" are used by the GEDCOM and MailMerge utility options; and
- the "Report Files" are ones created when "Printing" reports to the "Screen" or "File".
For each of these groups, the "Path" of: "drive identifier", "Folder" and "Subfolders" going to, and including, the folder containing that type files is shown.
The "<" button allows you to see the contents of the "destination folder". If the folder doesn't exist you will be asked if you want to Create the folder (and any missing folders in the path).
The "Files" button expands the display to show the Names of each of the datasets in the file group.
Click to see the names of the "Family File" group of datasets.
